Chinese Shuan Paper (Rice Paper)

Paper was invented in China, where it has been in use since 105 AD. The particular paper used in Chinese painting is Shuan paper, so called because it is made in Shuancheng in Anhui province. In the West, Shuan paper is commonly known as rice paper. It comes in three finishes: absorbent, semi-absorbent, and nonabsorbent.

P-6 Double Shuan Paper
Hand made paper with lovely creamy color. It is absorbent and great for free hand (xie yi) paintings. Makes nice brush strokes, ink and color results. This paper has been popular used by Chinese artists.

P-9 Pi Paper
Hand made from rice straw, this paper is treated with thin rice gruel or soya bean milk diluted with great deal of water so that it remains absorbent but not as diffusive as a more absorbent paper. Ink
And colors applied to it have a smooth and lustrous appearance. It is an excellent paper for Chinese painting, and it is also a great mounting paper.

P-10 CHINESE NONABSORBENT SINGLE SHUAN PAPER
P-11 CHINESE NONABSORBENT DOUBLE SHUAN PAPER
This kind of paper is not easily obtainable. It is coated with a solution of alum, which renders it less absorbent and therefore makes it easier to control the ink. It is best choice for Chinese painting in the gongbi (meticulous) style.

Gaoli paper is a semi-absorbent hand-made paper, with a smooth glossy surface. It allows easier control of ink and color than any other paper. This paper is particularly suited for Chinese Yunnan Rice Color painting.
